Sex is everywhere. Our world treats it like it's everything. Sadly, sexual brokenness abounds. Paul writes to the Thessalonians about their ongoing spiritual formation. Sexual integrity is one aspect. Though sexual immorality seems to affect a minority of the church, Paul addresses it, knowing the promiscuous port city may tempt them. Sexual integrity is about avoiding self-indulgence, respecting others, and embracing God's design. Finally, sex outside of marriage is not the unpardonable sin. God's grace runs deep.

To say our culture has an unhealthy concept of sex is an understatement. Sex drives movies, marketing, and magazine sales. It has reshaped public education and self-perception to the point that even sixty-year olds are encouraged to retain their sex appeal with the right diets, outfits, and skin care products. Sex is central to the American experience. Like the Corinthians, we rarely blush, unless, of course, we're talking about the "old-fashioned, outdated, repressive institute of marriage." Today we are. Jesus called his disciples to a "above and beyond" way of living the law. While others looked for loopholes or ways to manage their behavior, Jesus addressed true, heartfelt obedience. He systematically works through six examples of Hebrew law, showing how each is an opportunity for elaborate love. Rather than dissect the six case studies, this sermon will focus on the overall strategy. Jesus wants whole bodied obedience to affect every relationship for the disciples. He not only delivers the message, but also provides the model. His love is elaborate.

Everyone has potential. Sadly, many do not reach it. Their lives our wrecked by untamed passions and uncontrolled pride. Need a case study? Look no farther than Samson. This miracle child, empowered by the Spirit of God, spiraled to his death. His good looks, strong arms, and clever riddles could not compensate for his foolish decisions. And yet, God still used him and answered his prayers. That offers hope to those of us who likewise fail to reach their God-given potential.
