After resisting God, Jonah realized the futility of his plan. He accepted his fate and went overboard. While sinking to the bottom of the sea, sensing the nearness of death, he cried out to God. His prayer blended well-known lines and images from the Psalms. Broken Jonah repented; savior God repented. This chapter demonstrates the remorse we feel as we look at death. It invites us to redirect our hearts to God to find grace and freedom. (NOTE: Audio quality a bit tinny due to recording issues.)

Something pitiful in us likes to close our fist, fight, and own others. Our fear of shame and fiery anger motivate us to hurt them. The detailed tabs we keep--what others owe us and how they've hurt us --feed our bitterness. Sadly, sometimes we delight in news of another's demise. Paul observed such defective, self-protective love in Corinth. He called for it to stop. Love protects others, he wrote. The principle applies today.

Passage: Ezra 9:1-15
Duration: 42 mins 19 secs
Confession feels like a dirty word. And, in a way, it is because it admits the guilt we bear for our wrongful deeds and attitudes. Ezra the priest made confession for the people who returned from exile (454 BC). He lamented the mixed marriages of his people, knowing their religious devotion would likely suffer as it had in the past. Ezra's confession teaches about God's compassion and our culpability. It encourages us to take time to lay bare our souls before God.

Joseph had an opportunity to stop Christmas from coming. He could have asked for Mary to be stoned. It would have been within his rights, considering she was with child and it was not his. But Joseph resolved for a more merciful decision, putting his role above his reputation. In a shame-sensitive society, his choice was wonderful.
