God calls his people to do extraordinary things. Build arks and altars. Defy kings and walk through deep waters. Critical to every call is an act of trust. We trust God because he keeps his promises. The call to trust and assurance of God's trustworthiness encouraged the Hebrews. It defined all those mentioned in the Hall of Faith (Hebrews 11). Today, it will encourage us as we look at 4 examples.

No attempt to be original with the title line for the sermon. We will, however, explain its roots in Abram's story (Genesis 12:1-3). Abram embraced his call as a blessed man; he returned the favor by blessing others. His life--on the move, intending to mend, and aiming to multiply--provides a wonderful example for how to live with purpose. Indeed, we are blessed to be a blessing.

We make promises to our friends, spouses, kids, and coworkers. We don't always keep them. A broken promise breaks trust. An unfulfilled promise breeds anxiety. God, too, makes promises. To Abraham He promised a name, a son, international fame, and land. Abe did not see every promise come to pass before his death, but he believed God would keep his word. He did. He does. Jesus is living proof that God keeps His word.

Prayer is a two-way conversation. Us and God. God and us. We talk and listen. We share and hear. Except, too often we approach prayer as a monologue and laundry list for our Father in Heaven. Abraham serves as a model for prayer as conversation, teaching us that awareness, honesty, and asking matters.

Chapter 3 of God's Big Story tells of God's long-suffering relationship with His people, Israel. Covenant is the official term for the way God related, a friendship he initiated, sustained, and refined. The first half of the message summarizes the Old Testament. The second half teases out implications, especially the role God's people play in reflecting him.
