To say our culture has an unhealthy concept of sex is an understatement. Sex drives movies, marketing, and magazine sales. It has reshaped public education and self-perception to the point that even sixty-year olds are encouraged to retain their sex appeal with the right diets, outfits, and skin care products. Sex is central to the American experience. Like the Corinthians, we rarely blush, unless, of course, we're talking about the "old-fashioned, outdated, repressive institute of marriage." Today we are. More broadly, we're talking about the deadly effects lust and humanizing virtue of purity.

Our love for others -- church members, family, neighbor, and coworkers -- will never be perfect. We will be deficient in our care. Fortunately, if we are consistent in our care, it covers a multitude of failures and missteps. The apostle Paul closes out his lovely exhortation about love, speaking of its consistent nature: bearing, trusting, hoping, and enduring all things, always. As the message will illustrate, this is easier said than done.

Something pitiful in us likes to close our fist, fight, and own others. Our fear of shame and fiery anger motivate us to hurt them. The detailed tabs we keep--what others owe us and how they've hurt us --feed our bitterness. Sadly, sometimes we delight in news of another's demise. Paul observed such defective, self-protective love in Corinth. He called for it to stop. Love protects others, he wrote. The principle applies today.

Love calls us to UP our game. We may put UP and shut UP in order to build UP others. These actions are expressions of patience and kindness, two positive aspects of love expressed by the apostle Paul in his magisterial chapter on love. Moreover, these aspects of love are essential to God, modeled by Jesus, and empowered by the Spirit.

In his first recorded letter to the Corinthians, Paul addresses various issues with a fractured church. One of their great battles surrounds the misuse of spiritual gifts. Rather than building up the body of Christ, they're using them to build up their reputation. Paul interrupts his discussion on spiritual gifts to get to the heart of the matter: love. This opening sermon in the series looks at love as the mortar to make any gift or effort have lasting impact. Love is leverage.
