Mentors mold us, shape us, and make us into more effective workers for God's kingdom. The Bible is full of mentoring relationships, from Moses and Joshua to Paul and Timothy. All who are in Christ are incorporated in the church. To illustrate this, Paul loved using the body as an organic metaphor. The human body is fearfully and wonderfully made. Too often we view spiritual growth as an individual exercise. We do personal devotions. We make personal commitments. We mark personal progress in our individual battle against sin. We call these achievements "spiritual growth." Unfortunately, we miss a key component to God's plan for spiritual growth: the body. Ephesians 4:1-16 makes it clear, spiritual growth is a group effort. Paul urges believers to go in the same direction (character), agree to the core doctrine, and get to the final destination (Christlikeness).

During our early years of following Jesus, we commonly experience giant leaps in our spiritual growth. We share our faith. We read the Word. Several vices lose their grip on our hearts. These life changes feel so affirming. And then we hit a plateau, dry spell, relapse, or dark phase. Growth stalls. Doubts surface. Old habits die hard. For most of us, spiritual growth is long, hard, and slow to progress. The Corinthian church will help us understand why (and what to do about it).

Health things grow. This includes people and plants and local churches. Growth is not simply a numbers game, but it includes spiritual depth, as well. The book of Acts records dramatic growth of the church, showing the partnership between God and his people who were committed to spreading His word.
