Prayer is important. Most of us would concur. However, many of us struggle to pray regularly and with purpose. Paul turns Timothy's attention to prayer. It is powerful a nd pivotal for the peace of the congregation and its public witness. This was true in ancient Rome where Christians were viewed with suspicion. It is true today, where Christian faith is viewed with skepticism. If we want to good standing in these godless times, we should get praying!

Elijah's defeat of the prophets of Baal was a mountain top experience. But the elation did not last. Jezebel conspired to kill Elijah, so he fled. The running and hiding, exhaustion and hunger drained him. Elijah wandered in the wilderness with a death wish. But God spared him, spoke to him, and renewed his calling. For anyone who has suffered alone, this story reminds us that God provides, speaks, and gives us purpose. He is for us; we need to hear this!

The showdown between Elijah and the prophets of Baal is outstanding. Yahweh's servant stands alone but radiates confidence. He demands an audience with the king, proposes a contest with his prophets, and calls on God to show his glory. He does in dramatic fashion. The episode ends with shouts of praise, bloodshed, and long-awaited rain. The story teaches the power of prayer.

Pain is real and it warps our sense of reality. It can steal our joy, ruin our relationships, and upset our tidy theology. Pain can also push us toward God as we cry to him in desperation. This was Hannah's story, filled with heartache over her infertility. She wept, prayed, and made a vow to God. He showed up, answered her petition, and soothed her ailing soul. We, too, pine for his healing presence in our pain.

But when he faces a major bind, he realizes what he needs more than anything else is God's blessing. This message opens a three-part series on the pursuit, purpose, and practice of blessing. As Jacob learned after a night of wrestling, God's blessing is his greatest aim.

Pastor Tim talks with Monica and Jesse about their relationship to Jesus. We often speak about it being "personal," well, this was an opportunity for different persons to discuss what that looks like. They have great things to say.
