The blessing is not just our pursuit (e.g., Jacob) or purpose (e.g., Abram). The blessing is our practice. God wants us to speak good words, prayers of peace and prosperity, over others. As high priest of Israel, Aaron did this in Numbers 6:24-26. The responsibility is extended to believers today; we serve as a "royal priesthood" (1 Pet. 2:9). Blessing is a word of hope or permission, free of condemnation, and signified with a physical touch. Today we will bless be blessed.

No attempt to be original with the title line for the sermon. We will, however, explain its roots in Abram's story (Genesis 12:1-3). Abram embraced his call as a blessed man; he returned the favor by blessing others. His life--on the move, intending to mend, and aiming to multiply--provides a wonderful example for how to live with purpose. Indeed, we are blessed to be a blessing.

Jacob is no hero. In fact, he was more of a schemer, trickster, and ambitious figure from the Old Testament. But when he faces a major bind, he realizes what he needs more than anything else is God's blessing. This message opens a three-part series on the pursuit, purpose, and practice of blessing. As Jacob learned after a night of wrestling, God's blessing is his greatest aim.
