Family comprise many of the first and last people we see and engage with in this life. They bookend our earthly existence, shaping our identity and values. This does not mean family life is without problems. We have all experienced (and caused) deep hurts in family life. And yet, family bonds persist. Thus, we must learn to be friendly with family.

A spiritual companion comes along side of us in our discipleship to Jesus. They may serve a formal role (e.g., spiritual director) or informal one (e.g., spiritual friend), but in either case they help us hear from God and locate him in our lives. A spiritual director directs, attends, and prays with us. A spiritual friend loves, listens, and discerns with us. Spiritual companions find Jesus in their friendships; we need such friends.

Friendships are good. Some friendships are better than others. And, of course, there are best friends. Not everyone has one. Not everyone can be one. But we can all work toward better friendships. This sermon will look at Jesus's relationship with his disciples and principles of friendship he demonstrated with his inner circle of three (Peter, James, and John). Moreover, it will warn against threats to friendship. In the end, the message will push you toward better friendships.

The world is full of unlikely friendships. Cats and dogs get along. Buckeye fans marry Michigan fans. Rivaling siblings make peace over their shared animosity toward a step-parent. These unlikely friendships can turn enemies into allies. God did the same thing. He looked past our rebel hearts and reconciled us to himself through his Son Jesus. Jesus calls his followers his friends. This friendship is worth knowing and growing in.

Jesus led with compassion and humility. He led with fidelity to God and in the face of opposition. His leadership excited crowds, drew disciples, and enraged religious leaders. As he approached Jerusalem, Jesus led a little parade into the big city for Passover. He rode on a horse, His actions caught people's notice and eventually cost him his life. This is Jesus: merciful Son of David, Humble King of the Jews, Crucified Savior, and Risen Lord. His life and leadership compels us to follow him.

We live in a contentious space. Certain topics can cause relational breakdown and emotional eruptions. Too many of us are swimming in "argument scripts." We may even add to the noise. This goes against our calling to live as gracious people. Followers of Christ should build up and point others to Jesus with their words. They should do it with their lives. Paul asks the church in Colossae to live this way: winsomely.

Do everything for Christ includes family life. This is Paul's next topic in Colossians. He makes use of a household code, but turns it on its head by addressing society's "lower" members first: wives, children, and slaves. He calls them to obedience, as well as husbands, fathers, and masters. Household codes require cultural translation. Ultimately, they are less rigid rules for family power dynamics than case studies in how close relationships work. The general rule is that we should elevate those around us.

After encouraging a glorious mindset, Paul commends his readers to live gloriously. This requires getting rid of selfish ways of relating to others. Using the metaphor of attire, Paul states that virtue always remains in vogue. And nothing is more attractive than a loving, supportive, uplifting community. To emulate Jesus in the world, our attitude and interactions should look like his.
