Church

Passage:
Acts 1:1-11
&
Ephesians 4:11-16
Series:
God's Big Story
Duration:
41 mins 6 secs
The word "church" surfaces many emotional reactions. Some consider it boring, others a benign social gather, and a growing segment views church as bad for society. In God's Big Story, however, church comprises the fifth chapter and describes God's Christ-like, mission-driven, spirit-empowered, diverse, virtuous, and imperfect people. For the church to excel in her vocation, she must reawaken to the work of the Holy Spirit within her.

Passage:
Luke 4:16-22
&
John 19:28-30:0
Series:
God's Big Story
Duration:
47 mins 28 secs
Jesus Christ came as the hero of God's Big story. The Son of God perfected the task Israel failed to do: live as a light among the nations. He also died as a perfect sacrifice, and won a crushing victory over death, sin, and Satan. His finished work should inspire the ongoing work of his followers.

Covenant
Sun, Apr 09, 2017

Tim Sprankle
Passage:
Genesis 12:1-4
Series:
God's Big Story
Duration:
47 mins 50 secs
Chapter 3 of God's Big Story tells of God's long-suffering relationship with His people, Israel. Covenant is the official term for the way God related, a friendship he initiated, sustained, and refined. The first half of the message summarizes the Old Testament. The second half teases out implications, especially the role God's people play in reflecting him.

Passage:
Genesis 3:1-11:9
Series:
God's Big Story
Duration:
44 mins 55 secs
Chapter two of God's Big Story shows how his good creation turned against him. Human rebellion seized the day, and the aftermath--sin, injustice, suffering, separation from God and death--was tragic. Fortunately, God showed mercy, and continues to invite created beings to bow their knee before him.

Passage:
Genesis 1:1-2:25
Series:
God's Big Story
Duration:
45 mins 34 secs
We all love stories; they inspire, entertain, and orient us. But not all stories are created equal. God's Big Story (told in 6 chapters in the Bible) transcends them all. It begins with Creation, showing how all things originated with God who is orderly and wants overflow.

Glorious Standing
Sun, Mar 19, 2017
by
Tim Sprankle
Passage:
1 Peter 5:6-14
Series:
Unlikely Glory
Duration:
46 mins 29 secs
Christians feel tension today, especially as they engage culture from the margins. Hot topics like gender, sexuality, politics, race, immigration, and the Bible make people's blood boil. Followers of Jesus must practice humility and resist the urge to drift in their convictions. However, Peter's final encouragement to his readers does not center on standing firm on moral convictions, as much as standing firm in their fixed, future standing as God's called out people.

Glorious Leaders
Sun, Mar 12, 2017

Passage:
1 Peter 5:1-5
Series:
Unlikely Glory
Duration:
43 mins 6 secs
Leadership and pastoral ministry sometimes feel like they're at odds. Best practices and business principles have crept into the church, helping it run more smoothly as an organization, but sometimes at the cost of personal care. The local church is God's flock, he wants shepherds to care for it his way: more delight than duty; more generosity than greed; more service than aegis. This sermon is filled with pastoral confessions and biblical insights on spiritual leadership.

Glorious Suffering
Sun, Mar 05, 2017

Passage:
1 Peter 4:12-19
&
Romans 5:1-5
Series:
Unlikely Glory
Duration:
34 mins 28 secs
Jesus suffered and so will his followers. The apostle Peter circles around this theme several times. He implores them to face proper, expectant suffering at the hands of their religious opponents, not to create suffering by posturing or provoking others to anger. The gospel brings its own offense. Many stumbled over Jesus. When followers of Jesus experience similar suffering, like Christ they should face it with joy knowing God uses it to purify them and build character.

Passage:
1 Peter 4:1-11
Series:
Unlikely Glory
Duration:
40 mins 18 secs
"The End is Near." The line often sends chills up on the spine. However, when Peter says it, he does not intend his readers to cower. Rather, he implores his readers to go out with a glorious bang, shocking the world with their self-restraint, self-sacrifice, and solidarity.

by
Tim Sprankle
Passage:
1 Peter 3:8-22
Series:
Unlikely Glory
Duration:
46 mins 48 secs
God uses our lives as a glorious witness. Peter encourages his readers to think this way as they face slander and other forms of suffering as Christian outsiders. "Speak hope with your lives," he implores them. The challenge is as relevant today as ever.
