We put too much weight on our politicians (and they too much on themselves). They are not men and women in positions of influence; they are not messiahs. Sadly, we can put more trust in them to solve our problems than God, who sets people in their seats of power. Hosea calls his people to look past politics to find spiritual solutions to spiritual problems.

Family life brings tremendous joy and terrible pain. As dysfunctional as family relationships may be, family members are difficult to disown. God knows something of family problems in his relationship with Israel. Hosea knows something of family problems with his wife and children. We know something of family problems, too. Fortunately, bitter family problems get better with God... someday.

Worry comes naturally. Whether we are considering our health, finances, family relations, academic performance, or upcoming plans, it is easy to have an unhealthy fear. Jesus diagnoses our worries, but assures us they are unreasonable, unbelieving, unbecoming, and unnecessary. Trust is God - who feeds the birds and clothes the grass - is a better posture.

Greed affects all of us. It speaks from our heart, making four common claims. Jesus challenges greed in a memorable parable about a man who wants a bigger, newer, better barn. It doesn't end well for him. Fortunately, greed has an antidote: Generosity.

If you're under 65 years old, the word "submit" makes you cringe. You are self-sufficient. You make your own rules. You follow the beat of your own drum.
